Total toilet. Called and spoke to an older gentleman who to be frank had no clue (he was a dinosaur) and put me on wait numerous times and when he returned had no real answer. Customer service awful. Speeds are poor. Billing is confusing. Whatever your issue don't call them - you won't get anywhere fast.

    Do not recommend.

Well. I have to say what a totally useless internet service! Appalling fibre optic speeds, constantly streaming.

Its cheap for a reason! Customer service is hopeless, i have contacted customer services on numerous occasions and they advise me the service is running as it should.
Well they clearly don't know how to test it or repair it. i was told its an issue with my line, only last year his was all replaced by BT, so I know its not that causing the issues.
Don't sign up for this totally hopeless internet service.

Stick with who you know that provide a usable service.

Totally useless provider that clearly are not up to the game.

I switched from BT fibre to SSE because I was looking for a deal. SSE have a product which claims to allow you up to 17mbs for £26 a month. This would have worked out cheaper than my BT package. However, what you don't realise is that the claim to give you up to 17mbs only works if your own copper ADSL line can carry that speed. In my area, the copper line can only take up to 3mbs. In addition, the call charges are higher with SSE. So, my bills are fractionally lower but my speed has disappeared. I am now locked into an 18 month contract. Apparently I should have read the technical details of the package when I signed up online. I have raised this with SSE. No joy there. Basically all my own fault for not having a degree in telephone engineering. I won't be renewing with SSE of course. It's a scam offering a headline 'deal' and hiding the details. Unfair on the consumer for whom it is hard enough nowadays to navigate the minefield of financial and service products.

I have been a customer of SSE 76mb for just over a year now, and am well satisfied. speeds are as stated.
Price is under half of that i was paying with Virgin 20mb.
Transition was smooth and have never had to call them.

One question tho, to those satisfied and have reached the 18 months, what is the deal/procedure at the end of the 18month term, if any?

Have been with them for 6 months having been enticed by the price. My max speed to date has been 3Mbps. Had BT before with a top speed of 18Mbps. Very frustrating. In addition, the billing of calls makes my bill overall about the same. Have raised this with them twice using their online complaints form. Still yet to receive a reply. Onto the Ombudsman next. In short, only use SSE if you are desperate to save money but be warned that you get what you pay for.

Wish i never took this broadband out, never will i go anywhere other than Plusnet or BT. We cant load movies on SKY Q unless early in the morning. Kids cant download on BBC iplayer. Now in addition to the slow speed it keeps dropping out so much we are using our mobile allowance to go online. 20-30 min wait on phone everytime for help. Final straw is when i reset my login password for my SSE account it takes 45min to receive it in my hotmail account only for the link to say unfortunaly it must be used within 30 min. Now paying £170 to escape the contract and go back to Plusnet! SSE NEVER AGAIN!

Firstly this has to be the best price deal around - I will struggle to get anywhere near £21 per month when my deal ends in October 2017.
However - Although the speed is very good, I get near 50Mbs download it has an annoying habit of dropping the link randomly.. Not that random - usually within a few minutes of starting streaming a movie or downloading a large file, or a few seconds after I hit SEND to a long involved email, which is lost and I have to sometimes start over.
It is so unreliable I can rely on it being unreliable.

If it was not so cheap I would have dumped it 12 months ago. Now it is just annotying - bit like toothache.

Switched from TalkTalk to SSE but they couldn't make a connection. After 3 weeks of no broadband I cancelled and was hit with £149.00 charge because they could not provide the service
They are thieves - avoid at all cost.

i thought a review was justified to combat some negative reviews, many of which are simply down to online knowledge. Ive had the ultrafast fibre for over a year now (£21pm inc line rental) and its awesome ! now, lets talk a bit of 'tech' in laymans terms :) 1st,the router is poor, they even acknowledge this but it is free with free delivery. It works fine but the range is poor. Here you have 2 options, buy a router of your own or get a wifi booster ! Many have commented about throttling; this is done by many isp's at peak times, usually throttling streaming or certain types of downloads (torrents etc) , by getting yourself a vpn (virtual private network) you're much less likely to get throttling because the vpn makes the type of data you're using 'invisible' to the isp by encrypting it (a good vpn like cyberghost is only £30 a year for 5 devices). Do the above with your sse connection and you'll b hating when the contract ends because you wont get better value :)

I switched our home broadband and telephone service around a month ago, having checked this website out seeking guidance in finding a new broadband provider.
Maybe it's the luck of the draw or perhaps it depends upon where you live - I don't know, but I was in the first instance extremely concerned to read so many adverse reviews concerning SSE broadband on this website, particulary because I was interested in changing to their service because their charges are so reasonable.

However upon delving further into the matter I noticed that BT, our previous internet provider, who to be fair had provided us with a perfectly satisfactory iinternet service for the past eleven years had also received great numbers of bad reviews, so much so that I came away of the opinion that most reviews appeared to had been written by internet users who were harbouring all kinds of varying gripes against their broadband providers, and it seemed that subscribers who had actually received a satisfactory service had become complacent and did not trouble to submit any reviews anywhere which is a great shame as it does not allow readers to gain the benefit of their experiences and consequently miss out on any positive & constructive comments that might had been made regarding the numerous broadband service providers.

We wished to leave BT as they had become so expensive, and their price increases were becoming far too frequent for my liking .. .. .. .. However, as they say 'Nothing ventured - Nothing gained!!' so bearing all of what I've said in mind, I signed up with SSE purely on price considerations for their 'Up to 17mb Standard Broadband.'
I deliberately left a period of one month prior to submitting my review in order to permit my new broadband service to settle down, and to also allow a period of time for me to assess its capabilities prior to my submitting a review regarding SSE's service over a short period of time - be it good or bad.

Speaking as normal domestic users, (ie; surfing, emails, blogging, viewing webcams etc.) my wife and myself (the only users at home) are so far extremely pleased with SSE's service together with their most reasonable prices too. We are paying just £21.50 monthly (on an eighteen month contract} for broadband which also includes line rental as well as free 'anytime phone calls' also which is far less than what we were paying BT before we switched, in fact it's turned out to be well over 50% cheaper.

Our SSE telephone and broadband connection was made correctly on the changeover day of which we were advised of well beforehand (9th May 2017,) and the service since then has been most satisfactory, and the supplied router's wi-fi signal reaches all of the rooms in our two bedroom bungalow satisfactorily, which I found was quite simple to set up, and it works well.
We've had no problems at all with our SSE broadband at all, and the service is well suited to our needs - in fact we are pleased that we took many of the adverse reviews written here with a pinch of salt, and I'm able to say that we are absolutely delighted with SSE's service.

Thank you SSE for a good service at a reasonable price.

After repeatedly phoning you to say I cancelled my order, you have sent me the box, so had to send that back. My phone was cut off on the 5th as you were late in letting BT know. Today I received a letter saying you have set up my direct debit. Which I have cancelled.

Biggest load of rubbish ever, speeds abysmal and every time I call up they make me do the same things over and over again, do broadband speed test etc etc, then today I was told that my router must be at waist height in my home !!!!! Was stupid enough to take out this awful contract, roll on 16 months time when I can go back to bt or I may cave in and pay to get out of contract early or I might seek legal advice , be warned !

From day one speeds were terrible also the system keeps stalling and freezing .After numerous calls to SSE still no better and life is too short to keep running tests for them, talking to a telephone engineer who was working locally he tells me it is possibly the modem and even one SSE operator told me their modems are not the best. But no offer of a replacement modem in fact I have told them that even if offered ( which I have not been ) I do not want one,I will run the contract and good bye to SSE NEVER AGAIN.

    Customer service,

SSE don’t really host as an ISP they use Daisy Group at their backbone, now if Daisy customer service was picking up your call when you rang up you would be fine,

SSE customer service is a middleman so that is why they are not as clued up as you would hope for, responses are slow as they have to log a call with Daisy with a response time of 48 hours, could be shorter but would cost SSE so they would pass it on to you :-)

I had an issue a few weeks ago I rand a friend who works for Daisy and within 15 Mins was online again, now I know I’m lucky to have a contact but that's also the proof of the middle man.

    Broadband speed

BB Speed is variable for Fibre / copper and fluxes between 48Mbps and 65Mbps FTTC 22 Meters from the Cab

    Personal Note,

Great for the price you pay think my bill is £21 a month Inc line rental

Bunch of idiots. BB went down so spoke to customer service who done nothing to help other than tell to restart router and call back. I help for 25 minutes and gave up. Called again a few days later and said they'd be back in contact with me. Still heard nothing and that was a week ago. The woman I spoke to didn't even sound like she knew what fibre is. Just avoid and save your time. Bob the builder will be able to fix it quicker

This is an ISP company yet you can only communicate with them by phone and most often when they call you at THEIR convenience. Also, don't move house, otherwise you will have to renew at their latest prices and be tied in for another 18 months, or pay extortionate exit fees. It will also take over a week to speak to the department that can initiate the move, the timescale of which is 24 days. This is after someone has called you to ask if you want to move despite having emailed them to say you are moving and want to take it with you and then passing this nugget of information on to the Sales Team who will call you to start the 24 day transfer. This is to stay with the same company! Absolutely ridiculous.

Since we moved to SSE Phone and Broadband we have had nothing but problems, all reported and one fix at their end as Openreach confirmed there was no problem at our house. Upgraded to Fibre, and now can't use the internet at all unless you want to visit only the homepage of a website. Now trying to move away from them due to poor service (only been with SSE for 3 weeks) and they are charging me 12 months termination charges even though there has been problems on the line that they can not fix. Senior Management Team did nothing to help other than send a letter saying the complaint in now in Deadlock.

Don't Bother, complete waste of money and time.

Poor fibre speed, regardless of package. Constant throttling and poor service leads to simple tasks like Netflix not even working. Ombudsman rules that seeing as they don't actually specify a minimum speed they haven't done anything wrong. All of this can only be found out after your cooling off period expires and they then set up the service. Cancellation charges cost more than the year's subscription. Be warned.

I live in a rural are with slow braodband speeds. Having called Customer Service to report ridiculously slow broadband speeds of less than 0.25M I was asked to take 6 further readings at various times using an ethernet cable. I have no ethernet port on my laptop and for some reason SSE not happy with wireless speed testing. I can get wireless speeds eventually but I'd hate to think how my granny would. In the old days my previous supplier would contact Openreach who would fix the problem. Clearly SSE not happy with this additional cost to them, and will make it extremely difficult for their customers to get the service they will eventually (I hope) try to provide. I'd say if you live in a rural area, do not use SSE.

Easily THE WORST broadband service we have ever had! And we had broadband many years ago with v21 who practically conned us out of money with contract issues. I would have them back any day over this dismal excuse for a broadband service.
Like other reviews, it started out ok. We signed up to the £21 fibre deal. Speeds were alright, with occasional drops, but we were told this was due to the broadband 'settling'. Well, 8 months, several emails, phone calls and letters later, it would appear that our broadband must still be 'settling'. Poor thing, feeling so unsettled!
The customer service just kept telling us that we had too many devices connected to our router, which is why the signal was awful, devices would lose connection completely for minutes and the speed would reduce to minimal kbps. I tried to explain that we had the same number of devices with o2 (BEST home broadband provider we ever had), sky and plus net and we've never had this number of issues.
Being a bit of an internet geek and doing lots of tests, I established that the router was dodgy, but they refused to agree with me or even try a new one or send out an engineer. Very poor indeed!!
Unfortunately, we are stuck with this terrible service for quite a few months... but the sooner we can get out of it, the better!! Plus net or BT here we come!!
I would avoid, but I understand that some people have had an excellent experience with SSE. I guess it's all down to luck of the draw!! Good luck people and long may we get a day when broadband is fast and free for everyone!!

I have been with SSE Broadband for 18 months now and for the price I pay it is brilliant. The speed is easily as fast as what I was getting with TalkTalk without all the hassle. I would highly recommend SSE but they don't have the fabulous offer I got 18 mths ago. I am dreading the time when my contract finishes, as there is nothing out there like what I am getting. I have only had to contact SSE twice in the time I have been with them and the issue was dealt with very quickly and the customer care was excellent.

Do not bother with this shower. Signed up to move from BT due to issues with BT. Lord knows why I bothered as BT are far superior based to this shower. SSE told BT my move was scheduled for the 20th March which BT actioned. However Shambolic Service Extrodinaire managed not to tell BT that there were problems - result = no broadband for me. Have wasted at least two hours of my valuable lifespan trying to resolve the issue. SSE not really interested and still cannot give me a date as to when the transfer will be completed. Looking at going cap in hand to BT to go back to them. Suppose the old adage is you get what you pay for, and with SSE you get poor service where they blame the other party until its proven its SSE's fault. Ofcom here I come. They offered £30 to buy a mobile dongle, great if you live in an area where mobile signal is ok - guess what, I do not. When I told them that no other offer made.

I am still waiting to get a broadband service set up after 3 weeks and have just been told that it will be another week before the account come online. I have been passed through 5 separate "advisors". However I was not told of the time scale involved at any point - I have had the router for four days now and cannot use it for another week - appalling amounts of red tape and no consistency between call handlers. Not worth the hassle.

I was with sse fibre broadband for a couple of weeks when the problems began, I had 2 main problems 1: complete loss of broadband, 2:Speed dropping to less than 512kbps,this happened many times over a 6 month period, when I complained they kept going through the same rigmarole, I told them many times that I had done the test required by them, each time, and knew what to do, as I am a qualified computer engineer. They wouldn't send a engineer out,and the problem remained. Even after contacting the ombudsman and providing evidence of the problems, nothing was done. Oddly enough ,6 months after the initial complaint, when I told Sse that I had complained to the ombudsman the speed improved, I got a regular speed of 38.6 mbps until september, when the ombudsman failed me and I pulled out of the contract. I was informed by a close friend, who us an ex-fibre broadband engineer that it is BT openreach's fault as they are known to reduce speeds purposely, to encourage you to either upgrade or to move over to B.T. Its a huge con and nobody does anything about it because B.T are in control.

started great! fast speeds good customer service BUT then the speed slowed for 2 weeks before broadband stopped altogether they want to do everything over the phone so I spent 2weeks recording speeds morning and night that showed no problem their end and spent hours on hold before listening to someone that needs to ask a colleague every question (which comes off a script) The equipment is clearly faulty but they wont replace it. I've now given up and switched providers. SSE are useless their "technicians" haven't got a clue I will never recommend or use again

Being technically "challenged" I really wasn't looking forward to trying to set this up , and expected I would have to get somebody to do it for me . The pack arrived well in advance of the switch over date (13th) I read all of the instructions ,and looked at the diagrams . British Telecom cut us off pretty promptly , and the SSE service was there immediately , phone working fine , when I plugged in the broadband connections they all worked fine too , amazingly !! Put the new codes into laptops , kindle etc and we were all set up by 10.00 am , fantastic service .The speed seems faster than we originally had and its £30.00 a month cheaper than our original provider .It's only day 2 but so far it's still working perfectly . Would just like to say that if I can do it anybody can , as I'm useless with anything technical .We were kept informed of the change over date by SSE , and the pack was self explanatory , very easy to set up the change over and the equipment .

If you want a company that charge you for months after you cancel, don't refund you and then charge you an 'exit fee', this company is the best for you.

So I joined SSE 15 months ago on a 24 month half price fibre deal with 80mbps fibre. I had a bad few months with very slow download speeds of 0.2mbps after 4 each day till midnight.

I labor d with it for a year until I found out I could get off the contract after 12 months for 30 quid. I paid the money because daisy heavily speed limits certain traffic at peak times rendering the internet unusuable. Facebook videos don't work. Direct downloads e.g pz4 updates don't work. Anything other than web sites and Amazon prime works. I'm leaving tomorrow thankfully. Good riddance.

I had moved and booked a broadband connection £21.00 per 76meg ultra-fast with SSE and I was told that I need to wait 14 days cooling of period. Now hence I have just signed up and have no equipment of SSE within my property,(can see how that one works)after the cooling period had passed and had no confirmation on the go live date.
After lots of phone calls to SSE and told so many stories.

First story" we would have to wait again for the order to process and we will receive confirmation within 7 days."

Second Story" After contacting SSE after we had no contact with SSE, we was told that its in hand and we will get a call from customer services."

Three Story" We had to chase Up SSE and was told that we will have to apply again, the worst thing was we was sent a contact from SSE to hear the deal we had is not available and we need a new tariff. We asked why is it SSE trying to change the contract, due to SSE have stopped the Tariff we was sold."

Four Story"We was told that it will up and running within 7 days and will receive the equipment."

Five Story" The Kit had arrived and was plugged in tested and no internet."

December came and gone and still had no Internet.
So we had promises made and nothing was going to plan.
I find the company are lacking communications skills and rather miss leading.
The company seems to be run by Muppets and I have contacted on numerous concussions and to be lied too.
The left hand don't know what the right hand is doing.
I would not Trust this company due to the misconceptions.
A company of such a size and the CEO DON'T care what is going on within the company.
CEO don't care as long as he gets paid for such a sub standard service.
Great Britain is not great any more with companies like this and Muppets in control.
Do Not Use Company It will cost you and turn you grey.

I switched to SSE primarily for the excellent deal and fast speeds. Initially was good but then intermittent. SSE were excellent - problem ended up being an open reach issue but all in all had 4 engineers out. SSE regularly updated me and if the person dealing with my case was on days off she handed it to a colleague. In a previous property I have had broadband through plusnet ( who made me cry) and sky and there is no doubt that the customer service at SSE is second to non. I now have an excellent phone and broadband connection and have nothing but praise for SSE.
